Kelly signs for Glenavon

Glenavon have signed towering centre back Simon Kelly.

The 29-year-old, born in Armagh, agreed a move to Mourneview Park from Dundalk on Tuesday night.

The 6ft plus defender has signed an 18 month contract and if his registration goes through he will make his debut against Ballymena on January 3, the same day as striker Declan ‘Fabio’ O’Brien.

“We are delighted Simon has joined us,” said Glenavon coach Nigel Law. “We have been tracking him for some time and it has finally worked out. He will be a real asset to the side.”

Kelly has spent his entire League of Ireland career with Dundalk, making his senior breakthrough at Oriel Park under former Linfield boss Trevor Anderson in 2002. Kelly went on to make a further 108 appearances, scoring 11 goals, over the following four seasons.

He has played in the Irish League before, in 2007 he joined Ballymena United where he made 28 appearances before moving back to Lillywhites.
