INSTITUTE ensured a safe passage into the fifth round of the JJB Irish Cup with this comfortable win over North West neighbours Limavady United.

They were the better side for long periods of the game and always looked the more likely to win the game.

It took until late in the game for them to break the deadlock but a Mark Kelly brace was enough to send them through to the next round.

United had two early chances with ex-’Stute skipper Ruairi McClean firing wide from 25 yards before Trevor Parkhill brought the best out of Corey Wilson in the home goal.

On 12 minutes ’Stute had their first chance of the game but Ryan Browne headed a corner well wide when completely unmarked.

Seven minutes later Limavady found space on the left, Parkhill crossed but Lee Patrick couldn’t get the vital touch at the far post.

Midway through the first half the hosts came close to breaking the stalemate; Davitt Walsh crossed from the left found Stephen Parkhouse but his effort on the half volley rattled the woodwork and Thomas McBride’s follow-up was blocked.

In the 32nd minute ’Stute were awarded a dubious free-kick, but Parkhouse’s resulting effort, which wrong footed Laurence McCormick, flew inches wide.

Just four minutes later they had another good chance. Walsh was through on goal but his first touch let him down. He recovered to tee-up Mark Kelly but his shot was well saved.

United almost went ahead in the 40th minute when Gareth McConaghie’s rolled free-kick allowed Richard Close a shot which was deflected inches wide of Wilson’s post.

Just before the interval Walsh again broke the offside trap but once again he shot straight at McCormick.

In stoppage time the Waterside men did have another chance but Browne volleyed wide after McCormick’s poor punch.

In the 56th minute Sean Roddy crossed for Browne but he couldn’t find the target with his header.

Midway through the second half United came very close to opening the scoring. Parkhill’s cross was only half cleared; the ball fell to Lee Patrick whose fiercely struck shot flew wide.

With 72 minutes gone McBride broke the United offside trap but his weak shot was easily gathered by the United keeper.

Soon after the home side took the lead when left-back Jarvis beat McCormick to a long ball and his shot towards the unguarded goal was turned into the net by Kelly.

In the 78th minute the visitors had a good chance to draw level but McClean headed straight at Wilson.

The home side immediately broke up the pitch and ended the tie as a contest when Declan McKeever found Parkhouse his cross picked out Kelly and the big striker slide the ball home at the back post.
