Killie tracking ’Stute starlet

INSTITUTE’S talented youngster Aaron McEneff, could be the latest player to make the move across the water.

The teenager had a trial last week with Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock and is expected to travel back to Rugby Park next month for Kenny Shiels’ side to have a second look at him.

“It went well and the first day I was over there I was training with the first team,” admitted the St Columbs College student.

“It was amazing and Kris Boyd who played with Rangers, was in my five-a-side team. I was playing one-two’s with him and he was just banging the ball in the net.

“I didn’t realise it was him until after training and then I was sitting chatting to him, which was great. I got along with all the Under 19 squad, they were all dead on, which was good and I enjoyed myself over there.”

The Northern Ireland Under 17 international is hopeful he can earn himself a deal with the SPL out-fit.

“I’m meant to be going back over in three weeks time then hopefully they’ll put an offer up and then we’ll see the craic,” he added.

“If I was to go over to Kilmarnock, I would still stay here and do my GCSE’s and even if I did go over there, I would see if they could sort something so that I could do my A Levels over there, but that is away down the line.”

With Kenny Shiels as manager and Jimmy Nicholl as his assistant, the 16-year-old conceded he was made more than welcome.

“It felt like home over there, because there are lots of Irish boys that play for them from Dean Shiels, to Rory McKeown and Jude Winchester who are my age and because of that they just made me feel like I was training at ’Stute and that sort of helped me settle in and play my football.”

If McEneff does get a move to Killie he believes breaking into the ’Stute first team will have helped him no end.

“Playing in ’Stute’s first team has helped me physically and playing in the first team here and then playing in the Under 19’s over at Kilmarnock it was pretty similar and I made the step up and thought that I did alright, but I just want to keep bettering myself.

“So if I do go over then hopefully I could break into their first team in maybe one or two years and then use that as a stepping stone to maybe get to a bigger club then.”
