Kilroot hit for six

HAVING lost every one of their previous 19 matches this season, there was little prospect in Kilroot Rec upsetting the odds in Saturday’s Clarence Cup tie at Napier Park, which went to form with Dunmurry Young Men - second in 1B - running out comfortable 6-0 winners.

It was the ‘unlucky’ 13th minute for Terry Thomas’s side, as Dunmurry set the scoreboard clicking; Rec caught out by a long ball over the top.

On 24 minutes, it was 2-0, with Dunmurry scoring from their third consecutive corner – before adding a third goal seven minutes from the break.

Five minutes after the restart, it was four, prising open the Kilroot offside trap.

Goal of the match, however, came on 68 minutes – a roaring 25-yard rocket that thundered past Gordon Priestly.

Dunmurry completed the rout on 80 minutes, scoring from a penalty given against John Smiley.

Kilroot’s misery was compounded with substitute Will Welsh shown a straight red three minutes from time, after accidently catching the Dunmurry man as he got back up onto his feet.

Kilroot Rec: Priestly – S Smiley (Glenn), J Smiley, McCahon, Wilson – Bell, McAuley (Potts), McIlwaine, Matchett (Welsh) – Rea, King.

Best for Kilroot: Gordon Priestly and Stephen Wilson.
