Kilroot’s losing streak goes on

Kilroot Rec have only one more chance to secure that elusive first victory of 2013, a Clarence Cup tie at home to Ballywalter Rec on December 28, after losing 5-1 to Iveagh United at Castleview Road on Saturday.

Iveagh took the lead with a penalty in the Division 1C and showed no mercy from the spot.

Yet it wasn’t one of Kilroot’s worse performances as there were chances, with Johnny McFetridge demanding two fine saves from the United keeper, and Chris Sands flashing one just wide.

However, any hope of an upset were realistically dashed when Iveagh notched a second on 55 minutes.

If there was an air of inevitability about it all, perhaps new boy Gareth Logan didn’t know the script when his shot was blocked on the line.

Kilroot’s legs were growing weary in the final quarter and it was Iveagh who took advantage with three further goals. Yet it was Rec who had the last word, with a late Chris Blayney penalty.

Kilroot: Priestly – Brennan, J Smylie, Steele (PT Aston), McAuley – McDonnell, McFetridge, Blayney, J Wright (Johnston) – Spence, Sands (Logan).
