Kris gets the vote

DESPITE conceding a penalty Kris Lindsay did enough to get my vote for Man of the Match against his former side.

It was a harsh one against him anyway, with referee Colin Burns giving in to the vociferous home support. That did little to take away from Lindsay’s overall display as his dominance further irked the Linfield fans.

The home side frequently resorted to the long ball and that played into Lindsay’s hands as he was first to everything, showing his former team what they were missing. He was just as good on the ground too, winning the ball with frequent ease.

Manager Gary Hamilton also singled out the defender for particularly high praise.

He said: “One person that deserved a special mention on Saturday was Kris Lindsay. After being released by Linfield, to come back up against his old side and put in the captain’s performance that he did was a credit to him. He didn’t miss a header or a tackle all day.

“He was unfortunate to have the penalty given against him. From the start to the finish, he was immense.”

It was a day on which many of Glenavon’s players impressed. Ciaran Martyn put in another tireless shift and fully deserved his goal, as tame as it was. It had been coming for the midfielder as he bombed forward and caused a lot of trouble in Linfield’s defence.

Guy Bates was also tireless in attack while Andy Coleman made a great stop from the penalty kick to save Lindsay’s blushes.

Hamilton was also pleased with Bates’ efforts and says that his athleticism helps the new 4-5-1 formation to work for Glenavon.

He said: “Guy Bates never stops running. When you have him up front in that system, you don’t need anybody else because he occupies two centre-backs himself. That’s the way he is when he’s playing well. He wasn’t quite as good as normal on the ball on Saturday but his work rate was phenomenal.

“Like the two games before this one, I couldn’t say that anybody played badly. Maybe I didn’t have the best first half on Saturday but the other lads were all exceptional.”
