Ladies seal two impressive wins

ANOTHER two matches this week for the Mid Ulster girls and another two great wins.

First up on Monday night YMCA visited the Sports Arena in the first round of the league cup. Having lost at home in the league to YMCA Mid Ulster knew they would have to work hard to overcome the visitors.

Mid Ulster got off to a perfect start when early in the first half a goalkeeping error presented Simone Magill with an opportunity and she made no mistake to make it 1-0 at the break. The second half started well for the home team when after 3 mins Stacey Lee fired home with her right foot to double the Mid Ulster advantage.

Further chances followed for Mid Ulster with Michelle Scott and Simone Magill going close before YMCA pulled one back. A slightly short back pass was punished by the YMCA striker and it was game on again.

With 81 minutes played Simone Magill again provided the breathing space with a great headed goal to leave the score 3-1. YMCA were not about to give up the ghost and they with nothing to loose they pushed forward. An Avila Bergin goal on 84 minutes meant an anxious last 6 minutes for the home support but the girls saw things threw to go into the draw for the next round.

Wednesday night saw Mid Ulster travel to Drumahoe to once again take on YMCA in the Euro Electrix Premier League.

Mid Ulster started the game confidently and were playing the ball out from the back with Emma McFarland linking well with Chloe Barnes and getting some early crosses into the YM penalty area.

After 3 minutes Mid Ulster were on the target. Good work from Emma McFarland and Stacey Lee teed up Summer Williams on the edge of the box to unleash a shot into the top corner. 1-0 Mid Ulster continued to create chances and centre half Ruth Brown made a great burst through the middle but the final effort went just wide.

On 13 minutes Summer Williams was on the score sheet again. This time she struck with her left foot from the edge of the box but the result was the same. Goal for Mid Ulster 2-0.

The game progressed and Mid Ulster had a lot of possession without too many more clear cut chances.

Jackie Burns had to be on her toes to cut out some through balls and Mykylea Stewart and Lisa Richardson made some important clearances to keep the scoreline 2-0 at the break.

After some sustained pressure Mid Ulster got their reward when a Simone Magill cross came back off the bar but Stacey Lee was following in to head the ball home on 52 minutes. YMCA continued to work hard and whilst they had good possession clear cut chances were not forthcoming.

Mid Ulster made an early change with Hannah Turkington coming on for Chloe Barnes. On 63 minutes Mid Ulster extended their advantage when Hayley O’Donnells cross was met by Simone Magill to make it 4-0 to the visitors. YMCA pressed from the kick off and won a corner but Jackie Burns punched well in a crowded penalty area to clear the danger.

Hannah Turkington was next to find the wrong side of the post after good work from Samantha Kelly. Louise Murphy replaced Emma McFarland for the visitors as Mid Ulster continued to press but a YMCA corner provided an opportunity for the home team to regain some pride. A bit of a scramble saw Aine McKeever force the ball home to leave the scoreline 4-1 with 6 minutes to play.

Mid Ulster responded with Summer Williams hitting the bar and then Summer got her hat trick when she took a ball in from Louise Murphy in her stride and placed beyond the despairing YMCA keeper. Final score YMCA 1 Mid Ulster 5.
