Larne net first point of campaign

Larne recorded their first point of the season on Saturday, playing out a scoreless draw at Harland and Wolff Welders.

The Reds had a patched-up side but had chances to take the points. However, in the end, a draw was a fair result.

With Chris Keenan and Scott Todd unavailable, and Jamie Marsh having decided to call it a day, it was going to be a tough test for Larne.

The first half saw few chances for either side, with Gary Workman shooting tamely at the keeper before Paul Maguire had a headed effort saved.

Goalkeeper Darren Gibbons, in for his first start in the campaign, made sure the scores were level at the break with a fine stop to deny Stephen Garrett in the last action of the half.

The Welders had the first chance after the break and Curtis Black should have done better when unmarked at the back post.

A good passage of play from Larne saw Andy Simms combine with Workman to set up Sammy Devine who saw his shot blocked.

With 20 minutes left, Larn skipper Ryan Berry found himself unmarked when he got to a Simms free-kick, but he failed to get a firm contact on the ball.

William Wharry, who had an outstanding game in the reshuffled back line, combined with Gibbons to block an Arron Johnstone shot then recovered to block Davy Larmour’s follow-up.

LARNE: Gibbons, Moore, Lemon, C. Todd, Wharry, McClean, Workman, Devine, Maguire, Berry, Simms. Subs: McAllister (Berry), Irvine (Workman), Hanna.
