Larne net precious three points

Larne produced their best performance of the season at Warrenpoint on Saturday when three second-half goals, including two in three minutes, gave them a massive three points.

William Magill, Sencer Yilmaz and Lee Thompson got the goals.

Chances were thin on the ground in the opening 45 minutes with the home side having the edge. Daniel Hughes, Shaun Parr and Gary Boyle all came close, but poor finishing and a few good saves from Chris Keenan meant the sides went in level at the break.

Larne made what proved to be an inspired switch at half time with Lee Thompson replacing Reece Moore.

The Reds took the lead eight minutes after the restart when Magill netted his first goal for the Reds when he rifled a superb drive from outside the penalty area past the helpless Jonny Parr in the Warrenpoint goal.

After Daniel Hughes had shot straight at Keenan, Larne raced up to the other end of the pitch and doubled their lead. Thompson did excellently to centre the ball for Yilmaz to guide it over Parr and into the right-hand corner of the net to make it 2-0.

Gary Workman, who is again producing some of his best football, twice went close to putting the match out of Warrenpoint’s reach, but a fine save and the woodwork were to deny him.

Larne added their third in the dying minutes. Daniel Hughes took a quick free-kick just inside the Larne half but inexplicably played a cross-field ball straight to Thompson.

While he still had plenty of work to do, the young striker outpaced Kevin Anderson before lifting a precise finish over Parr to complete a memorable win for the Invermen.

Larne: Keenan, R Moore (Thompson), Magill, McAllister, McNamee, J Moore (Koypt 80’), Irvine, Young, Yilmaz (Wharry 73’), Todd, Workman.

Referee: Peter McGrath (Newtownabbey).
