Late goal sees Wakehurst miss out on vital win

Despite an improved performance, Wakehurst had to settle for a point in Saturday’s 3-3 Belfast Telegraph Championship Two game with Portstewart.

“We didn’t capitalise on our possession and the chances we created,” admitted manager Ian Gregg.

“We just couldn’t put the game to bed at one end of the pitch and at the other end, our misery continued.

“I’m not being complacent but I feel we have enough points on the board and enough quality to ensure we don’t get dragged into trouble at the foot of the table,” added Gregg.

The Ballymena men got off to the perfect start with a goal on eight minutes, with David Gage heading in Conor Gregg’s corner kick.

Gage missed a good opportunity on 33 minutes heading narrowly wide and just a minute later, Nigel Turner thundered a shot past Marc Maybin to bring the teams level.

Just prior to half-time Conor Ross become the second Wakehurst wing-back to score, his cross-cum shot totally deceiving keeper Joel Madison and nestling in the net.

A second equaliser for the visitors came on the hour mark as Gary Quinn’s mis-hit shot wrong-footed Maybin as the ball bobbled agonisingly over the line.

Jordan Lemon replaced the injured Stephen Mellon after 75 minutes. and almost immediately whipped in a cross from the byeline whichAndy Laughlin swept in at the near post.

As the game moved into additional time, the three points looked set to go with Wakehurst.

However, in the 92nd minute, a shot from Turner was going well wide of the target until it ricocheted off Lee Forgrave and went in off the upright.
