The 42-year-old Carnlough man joined the Merseyside giants in June 2012 and brought the club within a whisker of its first league title since 1990, when they finished as runners-up in his second season.

He was sacked after the 1-1 draw at rivals Everton. Reports suggest ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Jürgen Klopp is the front-runner to succeed him.

Kop fan Connor White, from Whitehead, wrote on Facebook: “His time was up. Too many poor results ever since we lost Suarez. Regardless of injuries etc it’s a results-based industry and, well, the results weren’t good enough.”

Gary Morrow, from Larne, commented: “I felt he took the team as far as he could. Time for a change and hopefully it’s a big-name manager. Klopp would be good.”

Peter Thommpson, from Carrickfergus, said: “Think the timing is strange, but probabaly just a panic to get Klopp in before someone else snaps him up. From what I’ve seen and read, Brendan has all the attributes and skills for leadership, management and coaching.”

Larne resident Stuart Pike added: “Great season in 2013/14 but we won nothing and are as far, if not further, away to challenging than when he came in. Klopp please.”

Carrick native Aynsley Gray, who now lives on Merseyside, tweeted: “(His) time was up for me. Atmosphere has been stale all season. Took the club as far as he could.”

Ballyclare’s Chris Jones said he would like to see the experienced Carlo Ancelotti handed the manager’s job ahead of Klopp.

“He has won it all and knows the PL well. Safe pair of hands,” he wrote.

“Klopp is exciting and did an amazing job at Dortmund but I don’t know. Feels like a risk. No more than a hunch!”
