Local club celebrates 50 years

ThIS season marks a significant milestone in the history of one locally-based club, as Red Star FC celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Founded in 1961 by Mr Sonny Alexander, the club, which operates from Woodburn Playing Fields, has competed in a variety of local football leagues, including the Larne and District League, Dunmurry League, Churches’ League and Boys’ Brigade Old Boys’ League. The club is currently competing in Junior Division 2 of the Ballymena and Provincial League.

Commenting on the club’s longevity manager John Hewitt said: “Over the last 50 years a lot of teams came and went in the Carrickfergus area. The fact that after all this time Red Star has not only managed to keep going but has progressed to the point where we have a strong, enthusiastic and young squad of players at our disposal is testament to the commitment and effort put in by the management and players of the club over many years.”

Given the significance of its 50th anniversary the club has planned two special events on November 11 and 12. Friday, November 11 will see a Gala Evening in the Knockagh Lodge with performers celebrating the club’s fifty years with a selection of songs from the last five decades, followed by a disco. Tickets are priced at £7 each and are available from John Hewitt (07718754725).

The following day the club will hold a match between the current Red Star squad and a team made up of players from yesteryear.

Manager Hewitt added: “We are hoping that as many former players as possible will be able to take part in the match. Obviously a few might not be in the same physical shape as they were ten years ago but it does not really matter if they can last for 90 minutes or five minutes.

“The match is all about having a bit of fun and meeting up with old friends. I would appeal to any former players to contact me as soon as possible if they are able to take part, or indeed if they can also attend our Gala Evening the night before. The whole club is eagerly looking forward to this weekend and we believe it will be a great climax to our 50th anniversary celebrations.”
