Local teams prepare for countdown to kick off in the South Antrim league

The new South Antrim League programme will kick off on Saturday, September 7 with only a couple of changes in the teams competing in the Premier Division, but will there be a change in the battle for the title?

Last season’s contest finished up between Glaston and Ballymacash, with earlier minor incursions from Sandy Row and Sporting Lisburn, but with Glaston the only team to win two trophies, the League and Ironside Cup, there is certainly the opportunity for a few other teams to come into the reckoning.

Certainly Glaston and Ballymacash will be in the mix again, but Sandy Row will have that year’s experience behind them and will look to do better, while Sporting Lisburn have always looked like they could do better.

Throw Lambeg Rangers, now managed by Mark Fenton, and Braniel YM into the mix. Lambeg had problems at times, mainly due to work commitments, fielding a team, but this could change and Braniel probably got too lengthy a run in the IFA and County Antrim competitions which cost them.

Warren YM gained promotion and it is unlikely they will be in the relegation battle. If their improvement continues they can do well.

Belvoir FC disappointed last season and can do better, while Bloomfield III are likely to be on the verge of the relegation zone with Ballynafeigh YM and Lambeg Star hoping to avoid the drop.

Look out in the August 31 edition for an insight into the new teams and the situation in Division Two and Three.
