Lurgan boy breaks the deadlock in County Armagh win over Liverpool

Lurgan-born Ciaran Corry kicked off his Milk Cup in memorable fashion on Monday night - scoring a volley from the edge of the box in County Armagh’s 3-2 victory over Liverpool.

Corry, currently on the books at Cliftonville, broke the deadlock before additional goals by Caolon Flanagan and Aaron Duke - the latter the son of Gary Duke, the Dollingstown manager - provided County Armagh with a 3-0 half-time lead.

The match finished 3-2 to the Orchard County’s Premier panel.

Other players from Lurgan in the starting line-up were Connor Jordan and Padraig Judge - with Martin Marron and Scott Rae both on the books at Glenavon.

“It is something the boys will remember for a long, long time to come,” said Brendan Grimes, manager of the Premier side and a coach with long-standing links to Glenavon. “It is just absolutely brilliant and full credit to the players.

“We had a gameplan and they stuck to it across the pitch, to the letter.

“With the Junior team also getting a win, it gives us both a great start to the competition.

“To get a result like that against a big club like Liverpool is just brilliant.”

County Armagh also hit the post twice in the second half, with Liverpool missing a penalty kick at 3-0.

It proved a superb finale to County Armagh’s opening day at the summer tournament.

In the Junior section, County Armagh had earlier defeated Dundalk SL by 2-1.

The match in Portrush’s Parker Avenue featured an early goal against the Orchard County players.

However, Adam Metcalfe and Shayne Lavery turned the tables to secure a 2-1 win for County Armagh.

Starting players with connections to Lurgan were Callan Duffin and Patrick McPartland, plus Glenavon’s Scott Megaw.
