Cookstown Celtic 1

Cookstown Celtic travelled to take on Celtic Club Lurgan on Saturday and suffered a 2-1 defeat after a tough game.

Cookstown started well and took the lead after fifteen minutes when Maguire knocked the ball down for Shane Devlin and he prodded home to open the scoring.

The scores were level on the half hour mark when a slip in the Cookstown defence allowed the hosts attacker time to fire home a well placed effort.

Cookstown started the second half brightly and a fine flowing moving involving McGahan, Maguire and Kelly saw the latter have an effort on goal which the keeper did well to save.

Celtic had some half chances through O’Neill and Maguire but could not find the Lurgan side’s net.

The game swung in the hosts favour when the referee failed to award a blatant free kick to Cookstown which resulted in the hosts taking the lead.

Cookstown rallied and were denied two penalties when McGahan was upended inside the area on both occasions. Cookstown pushed for a leveller but the hosts held firm for the win.

Cookstown Celtic have no fixture this week and return to action on Saturday 28th March when they entertain Sandy Hill in the semi-final of the Foster Cup at Fairhill with a 2pm kick off.

Training will now be on a Wednesday night 8-9pm at MUSA. Everyone is welcome to attend.
