Lynn builds from the back at Newington

They do say that all good sides are built on a good defence and if that is the case, it looks as though Geordie Lynn is creating the right foundations as Newington Rangers made it four clean sheets in a row in the league with Saturday’s scoreless draw away to Bangor Amateurs at Clandeboye.

However, it was Newington’s second 0-0 on the spin and while they are keeping other teams out, they are struggling to score themselves. They’ve netted just two goals in their last five outings in 1C.

As manager Lynn explained: “Its largely a new team, it takes time to gel. We’ve two new strikers up front, Neil Hodge and Phil McCann. It takes time for them to get used to each other. Once we start to click up front, other teams in the league will be sitting up and taking notice.

“We should really have won this one; Phil McCann, Raymond Lusty and Paul Gibb all had chances, but I’m really delighted with the performance – the players put in a great shift. They were super all over the pitch and all the hard work is starting to pay off.”

Saturday’s point sees Newington slide down to sixth but its very congested in the top half of 1C. Three sides are on 10 points, three, including Newington, on nine, and two on eight. Rangers, nonetheless, have played more games than anyone else in the top eight.
