Match abandoned after serious injury to Dromore’s Curran

Dromore Amateurs, sponsored by McDonalds Mace, returned to league campaign on Saturday to take on Shorts.

Their opponents in previous seasons have always seemed to produced a tight game.

However this game did not last 90 minutes due to a bad knee injury inflicted on Neil Curran. This resulted in first, a car ambulance being called, followed by another ambulance to transport the injured Dromore player to hospital.

The projected 45 minute wait for this resulted in an early shower for both teams and the match to be rescheduled at a later date.

The 55 minutes that were played had both sides on level terms at a goal a piece. The home side took the lead within a minute of the game with Simon Henderson heading the ball beyond a Shorts midfielder driving towards the opponents box and drove a well placed shot into the top corner of the net.

This would certainly have set a benchmark for goal of the season if the match didn’t have to have been abandoned. Dromore continued to create chances with Rodger Downey floating balls into the box for Robert Cody to try and convert.

Noel Allen also seemed to squander a chance inside the oppositions six yard box placing a shot over the bar.

Shorts goal also came within the first half with a long ball played from the back the bounce beating Darren Gibson with shorts striker able to execute one on one with the keeper. Darren perhaps will blame the sun for this flaw.

Both sides went into half time believing they could gain the upper hand on each other although this was unable to have been decided; as explained earlier a poor tackle from shorts right midfielder resulted in a devastating injury for Neil .

The side and coaches pass on their regard wishing him a successful and speedy recovery.

Next week’s fixture is a home game to Ardglass in the Intermediate Cup, a Premier Division side.

This further prolongs Dromore’s league fixtures already falling back in games but despite this David Smylie and his team view these cup games as experience which they hope to utilise in their league campaign.
