McCall first man to congratulate Glebe on survival

Ballymoney United through the gauntlet down to their neighbours on Monday evening, securing a hard fought point at home to Limavady United on Monday.

This put the pressure back on Glebe to do the buisness against Banbridge the following evening, or at home to Bangor on Friday.

With the goal firmly in their sights, Glebe secured a 2-1 win in the first of the double header, securing their place in Championship 1, while at the same time condemning United to the third tier of Irish League football. They followed that up with a resounding 4-0 win against Bangor on Friday.

“It gives me no pleasure that a lot of good football people have been relegated with Ballymoney United,” Scott told Times Sport.

“I know we are rivals but that’s my feelings.

“Joe McCall was the first person to ring me to congratulate us on staying up.

“I don’t need to patronise him but I have no doubt they will come back stronger for this experience.”

Scott said hard work and an unrivalled togetherness had carried Glebe over the line.

“It’s absolutely fantastic for the boys given what they have been through,” he said.

“They stuck together and had the bottle to hold their nerve to take us across the line.

“There were people who doubted us but thankfully none of those were within our camp.

“The match against Banbridge was a very, very good game and we more than deserved to win 2-1.

“I think the guys’ ability to have that bit of ability to dig in and do enough to get across the line.

“For that I have to give them big, big credit.”

Scott also paid tribute to his backroom staff for their efforts this season.

“Peter Tweed, Derek McKane, Gareth Moodie and Noel Laverty are as hardworking a team as you will get anywhere, as are in any division.

“I would credit all the success and the fact we stayed up to them, as much as the players.

“Overall it has been a big, big journey for me this season.

“There are a lot of things I have to improve on this season.

“We have slightly underachieved in that we are a better side than we have probably shown. At certain times this season we have went from the sublime to the ridiculous.

“It’s up to me to grow as a manager and improve on things which were wrong this year.

“Be under no illusion, next season will be the most difficult one yet.

“Everyone knows now that Glebe Rangers have a resiliency and an abrasiveness about us.

“The situation is nothing will get any easier. But we have achieved what we set out to achieve by staying up.”
