As their good run began, it was Conor Downey who was more often than not the man on the score-sheet.

He then passed the mantle on to winger Ryan Gourley and it’s a fellow midfielder who is now the one that has stepped into the shooting boots.

Matty McCartan made it three goals in his last three games with his strike at Fortwilliam Park on Saturday, much to the delight of the Town manager.

“He has been like a new signing for us,” said Ryan Watson, who welcomed McCartan back to his squad in January after the midfielder returned from Canada.

“It didn’t take him long to get up to match fitness and he has been outstanding since he came into the side.

“He’s a terrier in midfield. He never gives up and gives everything in every match.

“Now he’s added the finishing touches in the box and is timing his round very well.

“Scoring is a great habit to get into, especially for a midfielder. It’s been great for us and at a time when our strikers haven’t been scoring many.”
