McCartan named in U21 squad for trip to Cyprus

Former Burnely player Shay McCartan has been included in new Northern Ireland U21 manager Steve Robinson’s squad for their trip to Cyprus this
week.

The 19-year-old forward from Banbridge will be hoping to earn his first cap at that level, having had success at U17 and U19
level.

McCartan was released from his contract at Burnley earlier this month despite having impressed since joining the club from Glenavon in 2010.

He spent part of the past season on loan at Conference side Hyde where he made 1six appearances, scoring one goal where he was very highly thought
of.

Shay’s last trip away with the Northern Ireland U21s was in April when he was part of the squad which travelled to Macedonia, however he remained an unused sub in that fixture.

A proven goalscorer at junior international level, Shay scored three goals in five games at U17 level and two in three for his country’s U19 side.

He was also part of last year’s Northern Ireland U19 Milk Cup squad along with his former Burnley teammate, Luke Conlon.
