McCauley’s header guides ’Stute through

INSTITUTE’S Irish Cup 1-0 win over Dergview on Saturday, certainly won’t last long in the memory bank.

Although the home side looked more of a threat, in truth the tie always looked like one goal would win it and thankfully for Paul Kee’s out-fit they were the team who booked their place in the fifth round.

To their credit the Castlederg men had players in Tom Carlin, Adam Lecky and Andrew Sproule who in bursts looked threatening but they never sustained that threat for any long periods and the only real good piece of play resulted in ’Stute’s all important winning goal.

The home side missed a golden chance on two minutes when Darren McFadden’s knock down found Darren McCauley inside the box, but with his weaker left foot the midfielder fired well wide.

Minutes later Dergview went straight up the other end and got behind the ’Stute defence when Tom Carlin’s super run ended with him picking out Aaron Arkinson, but the winger blasted over.

Dergview went close to breaking the deadlock on 60 minutes when firstly Andrew Sproule was denied by Paddy McLaughlin’s block tackle and Adam Lecky’s follow-up effort from 10 yards came back off the bar.

With neither side looking like breaking the deadlock set-pieces starting to come more and more into play and on 68 minutes a teasing Michael McCrudden free-kick from the left, was inches away from Stephen Parkhouse and Dergview keeper Stefan McCusker did well to punch the ball clear.

Institute took the lead on 74 minutes when a fantastic Neil Harkin cross from the left found McCauley at the back post and this time the big midfielder made no mistake, placing his header back across McCusker and into the net.

Despite being a goal down, Tommy Canning’s side didn’t really push forward to try and take the game into extra-time and ’Stute ran out comfortable winners.
