McClean misses out

THE wait continues for ex-Derry City winger James McClean, as he was not in Giovanni Trapattoni’s Republic of Ireland squad for their friendly against the Czech Republic later in the month.

It was widely expected the Sunderland winger had done enough in the last month to force his way into the Italian’s plans, but the experienced boss admitted he would continue to monitor all players in the coming months.

Making the announcement, the Republic of Ireland manager said: “This game is the beginning of our Euro 2012 preparations. As we face this fixture, it is important for our players to remember the attitude and performance that brought us qualification. The Czech Republic are a strong team, and their system is similar to Croatia and Spain.

“This game is vital in helping us choose our 23 player squad for May. We will continue to monitor our players afterwards, and keep a close eye on their fitness in the coming months.”

With the news that the 22-year-old had not made into the Republic of Ireland’s squad it means his former club also have to wait for a financial windfall, which they are entitled to from the Black Cats, as part of McClean’s move from the Brandywell last summer.
