The midfielder’s goal arrived five minutes after the interval and it signalled another big three points for Gary Haveron’s men who remain in the promotion mix in Championship 1.

Portuguese frontman Miguel Chines put the Gers in front shortly after the half-hour mark when he latched on to Kyle Cherry’s beautiful defence-splitting ball to slot past the onrushing McKay.

But their lead lasted just six minutes when Mark Anderson’s looping effort beat Brian Neeson to restore parity.

That man Cherry was again the provider when he picked out McCloskey who smashed the ball home from the edge of the box for what turned out to be the winning goal.

Carrick remain in fourth spot in the table ahead of Tuesday night’s trip to Armagh City. Elsewhere, there were wins for leaders Bangor and third-placed Larne. Ards, who occupy second place, had to settle for a draw at Dergview.
