McConnell’s back in game at Welly Rec

Former Larne boss Graham McConnell has made a quick return to local footballing circles after he was appointed at the new manager of Amateur League side Wellington Rec. He succedes Colin O’Neill, who has stepped down due to business commitments.

McConnell maintained: “I was sacked at Larne. I didn’t resign, but at the end of the day, I had no qualms, results weren’t good enough. I was just annoyed with them putting out the story that I resigned, when I didn’t.”

In footballing terms, he likened his new role as ‘going from the frying pan into the fire’.

“Wellington are in a bad way,” he said. “One point from nine matches, and they need players in there badly. It will be a tough job but I will do my best. Wellington is a good, well-run club, with good facilities – and I’m looking forward to it, though it will be a tough one.”

The Division 1A side have played 13 league and cup matches this season, drawing 2-2 at home to Barn United back in August, but losing the remaining 12, scoring only two goals in the last nine outings.

McConnell’s predecessor, Colin O’Neill, wished the new man all the best, explaining that he had to relinquish the post due to business commitments.
