McEneff wins it for ’Stute

The gifted youngster’s first half wonder strike was enough for Institute to defeat Dergview in their final home game of the season.

In what was an otherwise boring encounter, the midfielder’s first half strike was probably the only bright spark.

Former Derry City man Michael McCrudden went close to breaking the deadlock when after he skipped his way through the Dergview box beating three players in the process his goal bound shot was blocked by defender Jonathan McCaskie.

The Waterside men did take the lead on 25 minutes in spectacular fashion when a long throw by Sean Roddy was headed out by McCaskie and McEneff was on hand to make no mistake volleying home from the edge of the box, past Dergview keeper Alan Buchanan.

Dergview went close twice to equalising but Aaron Arkinson failed to connect properly when well placed, while just before the break Warner Mullan’s effort was kept out by Corey Wilson.

Right on the stroke of half-time McEneff was in the thick of things again when his pass found Dean Jarvis, his cross would have been inch perfect for Declan McKeever, but ’Stute’s Davitt Walsh nipped in to head well off target.

Early in the second half former ’Stute man Ryan Campbell missed a golden chance to equalise when he raced clear of Graham Crown, but with only Wilson to beat, he blasted wide.

In what was a disappointing affair for the home side after the interval it was McEneff’s who went close to scoring again, but his shot flashed just wide.

Just before the hour mark Adam Lecky was unlucky when his shot fizzed just wide.

The visitors confidence was starting to grow and substitute Andrew Sproule broke clear of the ’Stute back-line, but he failed to get the ball properly under control and Wilson did well to clear the danger.

On 78 minutes Warren Mullan had the final opportunity of the game when Sproule sent him clear but he failed to trouble Wilson and fired well over the bar.
