McFadden

INSTITUTE’S young striker Darren McFadden, returned from a recent ankle break, to become their match winner at UUJ, on Saturday.

The big front man’s goal saw the Drumahoe side progress into the fifth round of the Coca/Cola Intermediate Cup, however in truth they dominated things from start to finish and only for some solid defending they would have won by a bigger margin.

Going into the game the Waterside men were without three recognised strikers - Stephen Parkhouse, Mark Kelly and Joe McCready - but in truth they never looked in danger of not just progressing but of conceding a goal.

The home side’s plan was to stay tight at the back and try to hit ’Stute on the break, but they could have fallen a goal behind early on.

’Stute had two half chances which fell to Paddy McLaughlin, the skipper’s shot went the wrong side of the post, while Darren McCauley’s effort was well blocked by the UUJ defence.

Just before the break Ryan Browne had thought he had given his side the lead, but the ’Stute centre-back’s close range header was ruled out for offside.

As in the first half the Drumahoe club had a lot of possession, but they failed to test the UUJ keeper Eamonn Browne.

Paul Carlyle made a positive change on 60 minutes when he replaced Davitt Walsh with McFadden, who only a few months ago broke his ankle, wasted no time in his return to the first team.

Good interchanging of passes from Dean Jarvis and Dean Carlyle fed the big Waterside man and he made no mistake with his left foot calmly slotting the ball home past a dejected Browne

The visitors continued to dominate things after they broke the deadlock, but credit to the Students who continued to harry and harass, which was great testament to their work ethic and never say die attitude.

In the closing stages McFadden and Carlyle had half chances to increase ’Stute’s advantage, but they ran out comfortable victors in the end.
