McGonigle is on top of the world after firing the Bannsiders to dramatic win

The teenager showed composure beyond his years to colly take the chance which gave the Bannsiders their first win over the Mallard in 13 attempts.

McGonigle was the centre of attention after the game, but he took it all in his stride, just as he did with his 91st minute winner.

“It was a brilliant feeling to score,” he told Times Sport after the game.

“I was getting it tight during the game, there wasn’t many chances to be fair.

“As soon as I got the chance I knew I had to take it. I just watched it hit the net and slid into the Coleraine fans, it was an amazing feeling.

“All the boys jumped on top of me and I took cramp!”

McGonigle is making a habit of scoring against the Fermanagh outfit.

He notched up his first senior goal against Whitey Anderson’s men in spectacular fashion at the end of last seaso.

And now he has scored the Bannsiders first ever winning league goal over them.

“It was always good to get my first goal especially as it was an overhead kick, but tonight’s was better as it was the winner and it helped us get our first win over Ballinamallard since they came up,” he said.

“We all knew about the record against Ballinamallard, but we didn’t think about it before the game, we just approached it like any other match.

“We were just determined to go out, work hard and get the victory. It doesn’t matter who it is against, that’s what we always aim for.

“Obviously it wasn’t ideal to be a goal down at the break, but Oran just kept us focused at halftime. We were playing well and we knew the chances would come, it was just a matter of taking them when they did.

“James came on and took his chance extremely well, and thankfully I took mine.

“I just planned to get in the box as the defender was pulling me, and I was thinking if he keeps at me he would maybe bring me down for a penalty.

“He let me go and I flicked it past the other defender and the chance came for me to put it in the corner and I stuck it away.”

The young front man is hoping he can build on this now.

“I’m really enjoying it and hopefully I can keep progressing. I just want to play as many minutes as I can and hopefully I can chip in with a few more goals. My aim is to get into double figures this season,” he added.

Boss Oran Kearney certainly has high hopes for his young striker.

“Jamie showed a lot of maturity with the way he took his goal,” he said.

“I had a bit of a pop at him at half time as he wasn’t getting it all his own way in the first half.

“I spoke to him at the break and got him to focus on what he had to do. In this league it’s about hanging in there until you get the opportunity and that’s all that you need.

“To be fair to Jamie he kept going until the 91st minute, and when it broke on to his right foot I knew it was a goal before it left his foot because he is a class finisher.”
