McVey counting the days

THE start of the new season is only days away and for one man in particular he can’t wait to get started.

And who could blame him for the last 15 months have been something of a nightmare for Kyle McVey.

After breaking his foot the flame haired defender set back after set back which restricted him to only three starts at the tail end of last term.

But with a tough pre-season behind him McVey is determined to make up for lost time.

“I really can’t wait for the season to begin…I’ve been counting down the days since the end of last season,” McVey told Times Sport.

The local lad admitted the last year has been tough, but he is hoping he has left the injury problems behind him.

“It was the hardest thing ever,” he said candidly. “No-one likes to be injured, but getting back and starting pre-season and then getting hurt again was hard.

“But it was even harder sitting week in and week out watching the lads playing and knowing you love to be involved.

“Hopefully this season will be injury free and I can get back to my best

“I never doubted that I would get back again. When you begin to worry you wont get back it just makes everything much harder.

“Looking back now I realise that I probably came back too soon, but that came with not being out too often due to injury, it really was unknown territory for me.

“I have worked really hard to get back to fitness. Six weeks prior to pre-season starting I did hard sessions every week with Trevor and Wes to make sure I was up to speed with the rest of the lads.

“I also did a lot of work on my own, even swimming, which I’m not a big fan of.

“Nothing beats playing football though. Those first few games were tough but it all helps build up the fitness and I feel fitter and stronger week by week.”

So what are McVey’s hopes for this coming campaign?

“First and foremost I want to stay injury free and play as many matches as I possibly can,” he said.

“I know it’s going to be tough to break up that great partnership between Howard and ‘OG’, but I just have to keep working hard and wait for my chance.

“As a team I really think we can go one better than last season and secure European football as well as going all the way in the cups.

“Last season was learning curve for everybody. This season I don’t see why we cant be up there challenging for silverware and making it into Europe.

“The lads all know what is expected of them, which is always more than the season before to keep on improving, with the players we have I don’t see that being a problem.”
