MANCHESTER United star Darron Gibson has given a number of his football memorabilia on loan to the Tower Museum’s Ulster Sporting Heroes exhibition.

The Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfielder will join local sporting greats such as Charlie Nash, Anthony Tohill, John Duddy and Jobby Crossan, in the exhibition that celebrates the achievements and careers of local sports heroes.

Making the presentation on behalf of Darron, his Dad John said it was a great privilege to have Darron included in the exhibition.

“Darron is extremely proud of his home town of Derry and is delighted to be part of this fantastic exhibition showcasing local sporting talent. He has had a very successful career to date and we are delighted to be able to share some of his prized memorabilia with the local community.”

Among the items donated as part of the exhibition are Darren’s Manchester United shirt from the Champions League Final in London in 2011, which is signed by players from both Manchester United and their opponents, FC Barcelona; his personalised football boot, from the Champions League Final and his Premier League Winners Medal 2010-11. His Carling Cup Winners Medal 2010; Fifa World Club Winners Medal 2008; Milk Cup Player of the Tournament 2006 and his Republic of Ireland Shirt, which he wore when he scored his only goal for Ireland, against Wales in the Carling Nations Cup Tournament in February 2011, will also be on display.

Margaret Edwards, Education Officer with Derry City Council’s Heritage and Museum Service said the Museum was delighted to include Darron Gibson’s memorabilia in the exhibition.

She said she was confident the items would attract many spectators to the Museum. “Darron is a very well known and popular local sports person who has fans across the city and North West region who will be delighted to get the opportunity to see his medals and football memorabilia. This is a great coup for the Museum and we are very grateful to Darron and his family for lending the items for the exhibition,” he added.

The Ulster Sporting Heroes exhibition will remain open at the Tower Museum until the end of December.
