Millar pleased with pre-season progress

Considering that Larne are still without a win in pre-season, it will surprise some to learn that Paul Millar couldn’t be much happier with how things have been going for the Inver Park team on the friendly fields as they head into the last lap of their preparations for another campaign in the IFA Championship One – especially as they’ve conceded seven goals in their last two outings.

On Tuesday night of last week, Millar’s team played out a 4-4 draw with the Sirocco Works team now managed by former Larne boss Tommy Kincaid and on Saturday three second-half goals earned Lisburn Distillery a 3-1 win that seemed most unlikely at the halfway stage.

“The match with Sirocco Works was a real eight-goal thriller, with some terrific goals from both sides – and some terrible ones as well. Adam Dick scored a cracker and there was a memorable one as well from the big Turkish centre-forward Sencer Yilmaz,” explained the home manager.

“Against The Whites we outplayed them completely in the first half and led 1-0 at the break. But I made eight substitutions in the second half, two or three at a time, because I wanted to see everybody getting their chance to perform against Premiership opposition.

“It’s not about having a win-win attitude in pre-season matches. It is about the players learning something about themselves, rather than about simply achieving results.”
