Miskimmin the difference as Mossley see off rivals 18th OB

It was almost inevitable that Ross Miskimmin, signed from 18th Newtownabbey Old Boys just a few weeks ago, would have a pivotal role in Saturday’s 1c derby, writes Alan Hall.

The former Donegal Celtic man scored two goals in Mossley’s 3-0 victory – and this after being on the receiving end of the first foul of the gamefrom former team-mate Phil McMahon.

Eighteenth manager Michael Jamison suggested: “Ross Miskimmin was the difference. I feel that if he was still on our side we would have won; he just gives you that bit more up front.

“In saying that, I don’t think he did that much, apart from his two goals and I thought both of them were fouls. The first one on Gary Craig and the second where I thought Ricky Moore was using his elbows.

“We were missing Ryan Greer and Aaron Knell and if they had been on, I would have played it differently for they have pace and could have got at their full-backs.

“Mossley are a big, physical side, they pump in plenty of long balls; they keep it tight at the back and they defend well but I thought 3-0 flattered them. I don’t think there was much between the teams when you think they’re fourth and we’re fourth from bottom.”

Opposite number Garry Campbell, a former 18th manager, maintained: “Three-nil was just about right, especially when Ricky Moore had a perfectly good goal disallowed in the first half at one-nil. Eighteenth were playing the offside trap so often, the referee was never going to get them all right. Ricky’s was definitely onside and we also had Ross (Miskimmin) and Terry Lyness through on goal and they were onside too.

“We were missing Lee Graham through injury and his pace would have tortured them with that offside they were playing!

“Eighteenth huffed and puffed, they had a few corners and throw-ins, but I thought we were good value for it. We were comfortable enough and I don’t think our keeper’s jersey even needs washed!”

Miskimmin set the wheels rolling on 16 minutes, cracking in a James McKinney cross before adding to his tally after the break with a similar finish.

Number three came from Chris Proctor, drilling the ball in from 18 yards, following a right-wing delivery from Ricky Moore.
