Missed chances cost Maiden City

Maiden City Academy U13...1

Glenavon U13...1

MAIDEN City Under 13’s made it another game unbeaten to continue their good run of results, however they will be disappointed they didn’t manage to defeat Glenavon, as they controlled Saturday’s encounters.

The local teenagers opened brightly with both wide players, Callum Moorehead and Dylan McCorkell, having the beating of their full backs. City created a few half chances but nothing clear cut and as the game went on Glenavon started to come into it more. With Glenavon now trying to attack City they left space at the back which Adam Dougherty exploited on few occasions but couldn’t carve himself an opportunity.

The home side finally broke the deadlock when Dylan McCorkell, who was now playing infield, turned his man and drove towards goal before firing past the Glenavon keeper from the edge of the area.

Maiden City went on to create chances for Odhran Crumley, Dougherty and McCorkell but none of which were converted. Just before half time Declan Sharkey had a header cleared off the line when he met a McCorkell corner at the front post.

City came out in the second half looking to stamp their authority on the game and stretch their lead. They thought they had when the away keeper spilled an Adam Dougherty shot and Justin McFaul followed in but somehow the keeper got back to put him off and his shot went just the other wrong side of the post.

Despite Glenavon not being able to threaten the City goal the home side were very sloppy in possession and just couldn’t find any rhythm inside the visitors half. Adam Dougherty was having some joy down the right but no City players could get on the end of his crosses and when he got the chance to shoot he pulled it just wide.

Glenavon levelled the game with seven minutes to go after City gave the ball away cheaply on the edge of their own box and the thankful striker tucked it away to give his side a chance. City then lacked the urgency to go on and win the game from here although they did hit the crossbar with the last action of the game with Dylan King’s powerful header from 12 yards after Dougherty’s corner.

It was a disappointing end to a game that City controlled and looked comfortable in despite not playing all that well themselves.
