Mixed results for Ballymena veterans sides

BALLYMENA Vets1 entertained Falls Vets in their opening game of the Veterans Bowling League, Zone A, Section A1 and got off to a winning start by 45 shots to 24.

On rink 1 Jimmy Shields, Alan O’Loan, Sammy Watson and David Balmer had a great day out against the Falls rink skipped by G Lowe.

It was the ninth end before the visitors managed to trouble the scorers and by that time the Ballymena men lead by 13 shots. The home rink continued to pile up the shots eventually running out winners by 34 shots to 7.

Eddie Leckey, Leslie Jackson, Dessie Shaw and John Millar led by 6 shots to 2 against G McKinley on rink 2 after 6 ends however seven ends later it was the visitors who lead by 13 shots to 6. The remainder of the game was close, but it was the Falls rink who claimed victory by 17 shots to 11.

Ballymena Veterans II 12, Old Bleach 45: Ballymena Vets 2 also play in the Veterans Bowling League, Zone A, Section A1 and they had a day to forget when they made the short trip to local neighbours, Old Bleach in their first game of the 2010 season.

Liam Lyness, Derek Greer, Peter Millar and Arnold Kenny could only manage a single shot over the first 11 ends against F Anderson. The home rink continued to play the better bowls on their way to a comprehensive 26-5 win.

It was a low scoring affair on rink 2 where Jim Cameron, Robert McCready, Wilfie Stewart and Harold Smyth took on A Campbell.

After 11 ends the Ballymena men had scored five singles, but the home rink scored a total of 12 shots on the six ends which they won. The Old Bleach rink won the majority of the remaining ends to leave the score 19-7 in favour of the home team.

Ballymena Veterans III 32, Carrickfergus III 32: Ballymena Vets3 treturned home with a share of the points from their opening match.

After a slow start, Jimmy Alexander, Edwin Donaghy, Lyle McQuitty and Don McKee took charge of their game against W Graham when they scored counts of 4 and 3 to lead by 5 shots after 8 ends played.

Shots were traded over the remainder of the game and the Ballymena rink were able to hold on to their 5 shots advantage right up until the end to record a 17-12 victory.

Joe Kyle, Bill Wood, Robert Mark and Billy Scullion trailed for the whole of their game against S Reid. The Ballymena rink made a slow start and trailed by 5 shots after 3 ends.

At the half way stage of the game the Braid men had reduced the deficit to a single shot but the Carrick rink made a decisive move over the next 6 ends when they outscored the visiting rink by 12 shots to 1 to set up a 21-5 victory.
