Modern Goodyear drawing inspiration from proud past

The showdown with Newmills at Annagh United’s Tandragee Road presents an opportunity for the Craigavon outfit to bolster the club’s proud past - but also kick off a fresh era.

Off-the-field changes in recent seasons resulted in Goodyear stepping away from the Mid-Ulster Football League for a period, ultimately returning this season into Division Four.

“People like Jim McConville and Dwyer McNally were instrumental in moving the club forward following a period of change,” said Stephen Moore, the current club secretary. “The players on the books displayed great loyalty, with many opting for Lonsdale League football with our sister club, Loughgrove, during Goodyear’s period out of the Mid-Ulster scene.

“The thinking over the past few seasons has been about change at committee level but keeping it all in line with the traditions of the club’s silverware triumphs from the 1980s and 1990s.

“Support from Goodyear Sports And Social Club, plus our sponsors, has been superb.

“Everyone is expecting a tough game but it is about trying to launch a new era for Goodyear by drawing inspiration from our proud past.

“Play kicks off at 7.30, with a bus departing from Goodyear at 6 o’clock and a post-match Happy Hour planned for everyone.”
