Moira Liverpool fans have a day to remember at Anfield

The match was about to start as the players made their way down the tunnel, the clatter of football boots dancing down the steps passing under the famous club badge and as the team emerged onto the pitch the sound of You’ll Never Walk Alone echoed around the stadium.

This was no ordinary day, no stars of the Premiership, but the lucky members of 1st Moira Liverpool Supporters Club who recently enjoyed a dream once in a lifetime opportunity to play at Anfield.

The opportunity came about after club secretary Michael Brady replied to an email from the Anfield club seeking entries to the competition and they were one of the lucky 36 teams from around the world to come out of the hat.

The team played four games, winning two and losing two, but overall it was a fantastic experience.

“We had a great time,” said Gary Dickson. “We managed to win two games out of the four, not bad for a bunch of crocks. We were very lucky in the fact that we got to change and shower in the home dressing room and we were the first team out of the tunnel onto the pitch with ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ blasting round the ground - it was fantastic. The organisation of the event was superb and we were given a warm welcome by the club.

“There was a bonus too for Barry White, Paul Stirling and myself as we scored a goal. Truthfully, the hairs on the back of my neck actually did stand up when I smashed a penalty home into the Kop End.”

For Barry, it was also a special day. “It was a dream come true and an experience I will never forget, added Barry.

Michael Bradley, club secretary, who was interviewed by Liverpool FC TV on the pitch said, “Just to set foot on the hallowed turf of Anfield was enough for me. I, by no stretch of the imagination, would class myself as a footballer. A lot of professionals will go their whole career and not have the opportunity to play at such a historic place like Anfield. When I think of all the world class players that have graced this pitch I felt completely overwhelmed that I was actually on it.”

Paul Stirling, Club Chairman, who scored probably the goal of the tournament when he hammered a 25 yard shot into the roof of the net added, “Our club would like to thank Liverpool FC for giving us the opportunity to stand where our hero’s have stood before us. I personally fulfilled a boyhood dream by scoring at the Anfield Road end and at the Kop end. I thought the day was well organised and the coaches and other staff on the day did a fantastic job.”

The eight man team from 1st Moira included: Michael Bradley, Gary Dickson, Neil McMullan, Paul Sterling, Barry White, Mark McCormick, Davy Clarke and Peter Martin.
