Mooney wants to avenge Irish Junior Cup heartache

LINCOLN Courts winger Stephen Mooney believes he and his team-mates can overcome Coca/Cola Irish Junior Cup holders Immaculata, in this Friday night's final, at Moyola United's Mill Meadow ground. (KO 7.30pm).

The Waterside men booked their place in the showpiece encounter after a hard fought victory over fellow North West side Maghera Strollers.

Clinical finishing from Mooney, Jason Hay and Lee Lynch secured a 3-0 victory at last week's semi-final and the former Glendermott man is desperate to secure the trophy this time round, after missing out four years ago.

"I played the first of the finals against Derryhirk in 2006 and that was an experience, which I don't want to repeat that this Friday," he said.

"Myself and a few of the other boys who played in that final are desperate to get some revenge this time round and win the cup.

"A lot of players have moved on and a new manager has come in over the summer, so for us to get to the final of the Irish Junior Cup is great."

Mooney knows the Belfast side will go into the final as favourites but like his manager Stephen Nicholl doesn't mind having the underdogs tag.

"We know all about Immaculata, they are probably the best junior side in Northern Ireland, but we won't fear them because we have nothing to lose and are in the final on merit."
