Moore nets three in Island victory

Amateur League round-up: Islandmagee’s Michael Moore bagged his second hat-trick of the season, helping his side to a 5-1 success at Shankill United.

Andy Waide and Gary Barkley chipped in with the other goals as Stephen Donald’s side climbed to fifth spot in the Premier Division.

Stablemates Nortel suffered their first league defeat of the campaign. Manager Ricky Beggs classed it as their “worst performance of the season”, going down 3-2 at home to Kilmore Rec.

Nortel were caught on the hop on 25 minutes but two minutes later parity was restored with John Rosbotham scoring for the third game on the bounce.

Kilmore edged back in front courtesy of a poorly defended free-kick just before the break but back came Nortel with a fine individual goal from Glenn Hand.

However, as Nortel threw bodies forward for a free-kick four minutes from time, they were caught again.

Only one point now from the last 12 for Barn United in 1A, although perhaps the writing was on the wall when Gary McKee and Dee Wakeham both pulled up in the warm-up before Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at Rathfriland Rangers.

Rangers led 1-0 at the break, with United keeper Stephen Brennan superbly saving a first-half penalty.

Rathfriland, however, rammed home their advantage on the turnaround, inspired by two-goal former Carrick Ranger James Costello.

In Division 1B, Wellington Rec lost 3-0 away to a strong East Belfast side. The Brookvale Park outfit were being looked after by a Ellis Cahoon as their search for a permanent successor to Graham McConnell continues.

Mossley FC climbed to second in 1C but Saturday’s 4-0 success over Iveagh United at the Glade doesn’t tell the true story, given that home keeper Dwayne Jenkins was Man of the Match, superbly saving a penalty as well as pulling off two more excellent stops with the game evenly poised at 1-0.

James McKinney’s early strike had given Garry Campbell’s side the early lead but they turned the screw in the second session with further goals from Lee Graham (two) and Ricky Moore.

Elsewhere, Newington Rangers lost 4-2 at home to Shorts. The Magheramorne-based club sit fourth in 1C.
