NEWINGTON RANGERS 5

It really was a canter for Newington Rangers in the 1C derby at Castleview Road, as bottom club Kilroot Rec slumped to a 5-1 defeat.

Kilroot went through all of last season losing every game, bar one, a 3-3 draw at home to Dromore Amateurs.

Newington boss, Davy Rollo, reflected: “It’s sad, because they are by far the worst team in the league and it’s hard to see where they’re going to get any points from. “We should have won by more, but the result was never in doubt!”

Newington lit the fuse on seven minutes when Colin Gilmore slipped the ball through for Adam McGivern to round keeper Gordon Priestly.

Two minutes later, it was two – Ryan McDowell releasing Stirling who cut inside, rifling the ball beyond the helpless Priestly.

While Priestly did well to keep out a Paul Thompson free-kick, Newington’s new recruit, Matthew Rice, did even better, pulling off the save of the match to claw away a Chris Blayney blockbuster.

At the other end, there were more saves from the ever overworked Priestly before Stirling hooked in a third on 39 minutes.

The Kilroot keeper was beaten again on 58 minutes, as McGivern rolled the ball back for Neil Hodge to open his Rangers account.

Rangers made it five on 71 minutes when Andy Hall got on the end of a Gilmore corner. There was some consolation for Kilroot seven minutes later when Johnny McFetridge flashed the ball past Rice.
