Mo’s defence is as solid as a rock

SCARVA Rangers breezed into the second round of the Coca Cola Irish Junior Cup with a comfortable away victory in round one.

The visitors made a purposeful start to the game and before long broke the deadlock when centre half Rod Douglas delivered an inviting cross which was clinically headed into the Ligoniel net by Dean McCammon.

The hosts doubled their lead before the half time whistle. The goal was the product of a sublime piece of individual skill from Steven Hendron, who somehow managed to turn in a crowded penalty area, outwit his marker and drill the ball emphatically into the net.

Half time presented hosts Ligoniel YMC with an opportunity to reflect on a first half in which they had played second fiddle to the visitors from Scarva and they upped the level of their performance during the second half of the tie.

They couldn’t prevent Rangers grabbing a third goal, however. Kyle Jennett’s unerring delivery from a corner was the perfect invitation for Rod Douglas to send a powerful header crashing into the net.

There was still time for the visitors to miss a penalty and for the hosts to score one at the other end, leaving the final score 3-1.

This was another excellent team performance from Mo Brown’s side, built on a rock solid defensive display from the back four of Jennett, David Morton, Mark Baird and Rod Douglas.
