New sponsor boost for SML

THE Ballymena Saturday Morning League have been in negotiations with the previous sponsors Dessie Cooper's ClickNI.co.uk and have agreed a new sponsorship deal for Division One, Two and Three from Dessie Cooper but under a new brand name EDEL-Tonic Sports Drink which is a new energy sports drink already being used by Irish League teams and has been a great success.

BSML DIVISION ONE

Carniny Rangers 6, Randalstown Sky Blues 0: Carniny had a convincing 3-0 win over Glenarm Rovers in their opening League game on Thursday and were in top form on Saturday when they hammered six without reply past a weakened Randalstown Sky Blues.

The Champions showed no remorse for Sky Blues who started with 10 men and within three minutes they were a goal behind as well when Roger Jones fired home a free kick from 25 yards out.

Just before the hour mark Carniny got the all important second goal when Jordan Kenny was fouled in the box and a penalty was awarded. Neil McFadden stepped up and found the net to make it 2-0.

Carniny were rampant after this with Jordan Kenny making it 3-0 with a long range drive. Then substitute Frazer Young came on and scored two goals, the first coming when he raced onto a through ball from Leslie McCaughern and then minutes later he coolly volleyed home a Neil McFadden cross.

McFadden rounded off the scoring with 10 minutes to go when he slotted home after being set clear by Leslie McCaughern as the Champions look in ominous form.

ARKMEDIA O'KANE CUP, ROUND TWO

North End 2, Templepatrick 3: Steffan Getty was the man of the match with a hat trick which saw 2nd Division Templepatrick beating 1st Division North End - something they failed to do last season when they were in Division One.

Both teams started with a great tempo, but it was the away side who opened the scoring when Darren Buckley slipped in Steffan Getty to score with a composed finish.

Northend soon drew level when Declan Higgins drove in from the right and fired into the far corner of the net.

With things evenly poised John Knox came bursting out of defence making two great tackles to win the ball before a slide rule pass into Steffan Getty who shrugged off the defender and chipped the North End keeper Aaron Wilson to put the visitors 2-1 up at half time.

Northend levelled the match early on in the second half when a shot by Paddy O'Neill was turned into the net by Cormac Gordon.

Both teams went in search of the winner but it was Templepatrick's day and Getty when the striker bagged his third with 3mins to go by rounding the North End keeper Aaron Wilson to score from a tight angle when put through by Scuba Carnwath.

The only real shock came when Westend Athletic, playing their first home game at the Showgrounds beat 1st Division Carnlough Swifts.

Newcomers Cushendall FC were beaten by the odd goal in three by 2nd Division side Waveney Swifts at Garron Towers School. The biggest score of the day came from Ballykeel who hit six past Holywell without reply.

Earlier in the week, saw the majority of the 1st Round of the ARKMEDIA O'Kane Cup being completed and it produced the shock of the Round when Carnlough Swifts beat last years Finalists Abbeyview. Clough Rangers put five past new comers Galgorm FC without reply while a new look Broadway Celtic hammered Riverdale 8-0.

Riverdale 1, Lisnafillan Swifts 3: Both teams entered this match on the back of heavy defeats in the O'Kane Cup but Lisnafillan were quickly into their stride and they were playing nice neat football.

It was after winger Chris McGaughey's tricky run that he played the ball inside to Ricky Davis and the midfielders beautiful through ball was met on the half volley by Sean Norris who slotted home to make it 1-0.

John Kirk then played a great ball down the left wing for Chris McGaughey to race onto and he lobbed the onrushing Riverdale keeper from 18 yards to put the Swifts 2-0 up.

Gareth Burnside this time took the opportunity to release Chris McGaughey down the wing and his shot was superbly saved by Riverdale keeper who could only parry it out to Brian O'Hara who poked home from 6 yards.

The 2nd half was the complete opposite to the first with Riverdale controlling the game for most of the half and their pressure paid off when on a break they were awarded a penalty which Ricky Magill converted.

BSML DIVISION ONE

Broadway Celtic 2, FC Moylena 1: Celtic earned a hard fought three points against a strong Moylena side to get them off to a perfect start on their return to Division One.

Celtic took the lead on 34 minutes when Philip Lynn swung over a cross from the right which Brett McLaughlin headed home from 6 yards out.

The second half continued in the same vain with Celtic gaining a platform in the game by winning the midfield battle and they doubled their lead on 62 minutes when a long ball out of defence found Gavin Burnside who finished nicely.

Celtic were then dealt a major blow when they were reduced to 10 men and from this Moylena threw everything at Celtic and got a goal back with 10 minutes to go when David Moore cut the ball back for Stevie Nicholl to fire home at the back post.
