Fergie ready forAmsterdam test

EGLINTON’S Shane Ferguson will be using Northern Ireland’s international friendly against Holland, in Amsterdam this weekend, to try and impress his club manager at Newcastle United.

The talented left-winger who is expected to earn his second cap for his country, as Michael O’Neill has a young and inexperienced squad that will be taking on one of the pre-Euro 2012 favourites.

Nevertheless Ferguson isn’t at all overawed about facing the likes of Wesley Sneijder, Rafael Van Der Vaart, Robin Van Persie or Arjen Robben, in fact he’s hoping the Toon Army boss Alan Pardew is watching.

“We have a young side going into the Holland game and although we know it’s going to be tough, we are all looking forward to it,” admitted Ferguson.

“I’m hoping to do well and although the season with Newcastle has finished, I’ll be using the game as preparation for next season because we are playing such top opposition.”

The 20-year-old, who only signed a new five year deal at St James’ Park last year, got a taste of the Premier League on a number of occasions and he wants more of the same in the 2012/13 campaign.

“Yeah it was great being involved with the first team for a lot of the games last season and the manager (Alan Pardew) gave me some game time in quite a few games towards the end of the season,” he added.

“So hopefully this season I’ll get more games under my belt, but my first priority is the Holland game and playing for my country, then whenever I go back to Newcastle, I’ll be looking to have a good pre-season and then try to do enough to force my way into the manager’s plans.

“Last season around Christmas time there was some talk about me maybe going out on loan, but the manager didn’t want that and he wanted me to stay. However if he feels that I have to go out on loan this season then I’ll go with his decision.

“I know that I’ll have to work hard but the manager showed faith in me last season, which was really pleasing, so hopefully he’ll continue to show that faith again for next season.”

The Magpies had a fantastic season last year and although they just missed out on a Champions League spot, they did secure a Europa League position and playing European football is something Ferguson is already dreaming about.

The Toon Army last year had great players like Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa and Papiss Cisse and Northern Ireland international is hoping Pardew will be able to add a few more quality players this season.

“We made a lot of great signings last season and hopefully we’ll add a few more over the summer,” added the talented winger.

“Last year we had a fantastic season, no one really gave us a hope at the start of the season and they also thought we would just fade away as the season went on, but that didn’t happen.

“Although we had a few disappointing results towards the end and just missed out on the Champions League spot, we still had a super season and ended up getting a place in the Europa League.

“Playing in Europe with Newcastle would be great, because European nights at St James’ Park are something special, but I know what I have to do if I want to get involved with the first team again this season.”
