No ‘point’ slippingup ahead of big one

After back to back wins Glenavon will want to avoid any slip-ups against Warrenpoint Town this weekend ahead of the festive derby with Portadown.

The aim is to pick up another three points to keep the momentum going for Boxing Day.

Bottom of the table Warrenpoint Town should be put to the sword, however, these are the type of games a team can easily drop their guard and slip up.

Barry Gray’s side fell to their 13th straight Premiership defeat at Ballymena last Saturday, but a home win at Mourneview Park is not a foregone conclusion for Glenavon boss Gary Hamilton.

“We go into the game as strong favourites and everyone will expect it to be a home banker and a case of how many we win by,” said Hamilton.

“I don’t see it that way. There is a lot of talk about how long it is since Warrenpoint won a league game. I am always looking at stats and facts and I know the law of averages has to favour a team at some point as they cannot keep losing.

“We do not fear any team, but we know all runs come to an end.

“If anything, we have to produce an even better performance to make sure of the points.

“All we have control over is how we play. We know what can happen if we don’t play to our potential. They may be bottom of the league but that means nothing. Annagh United are a division below us and they beat us and last year H&W Welders knocked us out of the cup, so it only emphasises games are never won on paper.”

The team will remain the same unless of any injuries at training. Last week Andy McGrory sustained a broken nose at training but was able to make the bench at Coleraine. Kevin Braniff is also itching to get back, but minutes on the pitch last week were ruled out because of the heavy surface.

Tickets for the Boxing Day game are selling fast and fans are urged not to leave it until Saturday if they are planning to attend the festive derby.

Only a few tickets are left from the Glenavon allocation and club officials believe they will be all gone on Thursday night.

They can be bought at the ground on Thursday between 7.00pm and 9.00pm.
