Northend under-14s continue to catch eye with impressive displays

The U14s continue to set the pace for the rest of the Northend teams in the Lisburn League when they drew with Irish league Academy side, Portadown Youth on Saturday.

The U15s were beaten by Newry City after conceding a few soft goals while the U16s continue to dominate matches without scoring the important goals.

The U12s continue to turn heads up in the North West when they played out an end to end entertaining draw with Magherafelt Sky Blues.

It was also a good day for the talented U10s who ran in ten goals against Ballymena United’s second string.

The U11 teams didn’t fare as well, when the United team ran Bertie Peacocks close in an entertaining game, and the Youth team lost to Ballymena United’s first string.

The U9s continue to dominate the matches in the new IFA sponsored competition held at the Ballymena Showgrounds on Saturday morning.

Finally, the Football Development Centre came to an end on Monday night where close to 40 boys and girls were enjoying their first steps in football, under the direction of Northend’s Football Development Officer – John Devlin.

★Another competitive weekend for both U9 teams as they played teams from Ballymena, Carniny and Coaching for Christ. This week saw both the Northend teams paired against each other with Northend United coming out on top in an end to end match.

Northend United 10, Ballymena Town 4: Jay McKeown scored a first half hat-trick as Northend led 3-1 at the break.

Although Ballymena pulled a goal back at the start of the second half, a spell of three goals in three minutes - two from Mitchell and another from McKeown - finished this game off.

McKeown took his personal tally to five before Callum Lutton got his first goal of the season.

Shea O’Broin scored a couple of superb goals before Ballymena pulled two goals back late on. MOM - Eoin Mitchell

Northend United 3, Bertie’s Little Ants 6: Bertie’s made the most of the strong wind in their favour to lead 3-0 at the break.

As the goals continued at both ends in the second half, Lewis Hector and David McKay (2) brought Northend back into the game before a sixth goal for Bertie’s late on gave the scoreline something of a flattering look. MOM - David McKay.

Northend Youth 0, Ballymena United 7: The Northend boys were without a few of their key players and it showed straight away with a Ballymena United goal within the first few minutes.

Despite several excellent saves by Darragh Killough, in his debut as goalkeeper, Ballymena united very quickly increased the goal tally.

Overall although Ballymena United had a deserved win, the Northend boys should take positives from their attitude and determination right to the final whistle.

Northend United 0, Magherafelt Sky Blues 0: This match was played in front of a large crowd and both teams didn’t disappoint.

The only thing missing were goals as Northend hit the crossbar and had the ball cleared of the line and with the last kick of the ball Magherafelt hit the top of the crossbar as well to end a fantastic game between two good football teams.

UNDER-14

Portadown Youth 1, Northend United 1: Northend threw away all three points in this game by conceding yet another soft goal in the last minute of the game.

It was Robert Iovu who put Northend one goal up ten minutes into the second half with a superb free-kick. At this stage Northend were well on top but failed to get that critical second goal.

Northend were punished cruelly when a defensive mistake in the last 30 seconds of the game, cost them all three points.

Newry City 4, Northend United 1: Northend fell behind after five minutes of this match, when Newry scored from a corner kick, as their striker bundled the ball into the net past Josh Mark in the Northend nets.

Newry further increased their lead after fifteen minutes when a defensive mistake allowed their striker to run on and plant the ball into the bottom corner of the Northend net.

The Blues were made to pay for misses when Newry scored a third goal just before half time, when again a defensive error let their striker in to score. Half time score 3-0

Into the second half and the match was only twenty seconds old when Kuba Babuszewski played a one-two with Jamie Stevenson and ran on to plant the ball into the bottom corner of the Newry net.

However the comeback was short lived when again the Northend defence gifted Newry their fourth goal, two minutes later.

The Northend central midfield of Ben McGarvey and Jamie Stevenson were beginning the pull the strings in midfield and Sam Hutchinson was unlucky to see a good header go narrowly over the bar.

James Hayburn again caused havoc on the Northend left wing and again saw a good cross flash across the Newry six yard box with nobody able to score. MOM - Kuba Babuszewski, Ben McGarvey

Northend United’s Football Development Centre recommences again after a short break on Friday 7th November at the Sentry Hill Sports Hall.

The Football Development Centre is open to all boys and girls aged 4 to 8 inclusive who are unconnected with any other Club and takes place each Monday night from 6.00pm to 7.30pm.
