Jaap Stam online blip for FC Cincinnati but Bobby Edwards thrilled at chance to learn from Manchester United legend

FC Cincinnati may have hit the headlines last week for a social media mishap but former Portadown goalkeeper Bobby Edwards is hoping to have the last laugh following the arrival of Manchester United legend Jaap Stam as manager.

Edwards, who left the Ports in January following six eye-catching months between the posts, is relishing the chance to work under Stam despite an unusual start to life at the American outfit for the former United and Holland ace.

Considered one of the greatest defenders of his generation, Stam arrives in the USA having managerial experience in his homeland and England across a glittering career.

However, the FC Cincinnati social media team announced Stam’s appointment online by initially posting an image of Ajax youth coach Tinus van Teunenbroek - leading to much amusement from rival MLS clubs who offered a warm welcome by using pictures of lookalikes including actors Bruce Willis, Vin Diesel and Jason Statham.

FC Cincinnati saw the funny side and shared in the joke by ultimately posting a fresh tweet highlighting ‘actual head coach’ Stam.

Edwards’ main focus, however, is only on the serious business of career development under Stam.

“Personally, the opportunity to play under Stam is something I would never thought possible and it is still sinking in,” said Edwards, who proved key to the pre-lockdown promotion hopes of Bluefin Sport Championship league leaders Portadown across the first half of the season. “I am unbelievably excited to get started and continue to grow and learn from someone who has achieved countless success at the highest levels.

“I also believe this hiring speaks to the strength of the front office and the direction FC Cincinnati is moving in.

“Although it is uncertain as to when exactly he will be able to arrive stateside, it has obviously been an exciting time for both the club and community.

“His resume speaks for itself - one of the greatest defenders to ever play the game.

“He set the standard of excellence for the following generations and inspired countless young footballers week in and week out.

“Now it is time to get to work...I look forward to this exciting time and positively contributing to this club under our new manager.”
