Web wonder Adam Salley back to business with Portadown

Adam Salley has spent this week as an internet sensation but is happy to share the spotlight with his team-mates to keep the Portadown title push on target.

Salley finished with three goals in Saturday’s 7-1 success over Queen’s at Shamrock Park.

However, it was one shot which failed to find the net that left Salley a web hit.

Millions online have watched footage recorded by the Ports TV team in which Salley’s shot beat the Queen’s goalkeeper only to get stuck in the mud as the striker turned away to celebrate.

Ports colleague Chris Lavery reacted to knock the ball home and Salley would be keen to see the goals continue to flow for his team-mates when the Bluefin Sport Championship leaders today tackle Ards.

“It has been a laugh within the dressing room and, to be honest, a crazy reaction online,” said Salley. “Millions have watched the footage but, thankfully, I finished with a hat-trick so am happy enough.

“I don’t mind who ends up in the headlines as long as we win - although, as a striker, I always want to score goals.

“I’m now on 19 goals for this season and have my next target as 22 to bring up 50 overall during my time at Portadown.

“I love it at Portadown playing under Matthew Tipton and as part of such a great squad.

“We still have a young group and I’ve just turned 23-years-old but see myself as one of the more senior experienced players.

“I’m enjoying that role this season and feel I’m growing into taking on more responsibility.”

Derby rivals Loughgall trail the Ports by 10 points, having played one game fewer, heading into a weekend visit to Ballyclare Comrades.

Salley’s focus is on a strong finish to the season but remains wary of the need to maintain standards.

“There are still plenty of games to go and no-one is going to take their eye off the ball,” said Salley. “It wouldn’t be allowed to happen by the manager or coaching team but also the players.

“We know Ards have been in decent form of late so can expect another tough game this weekend.

“I think over this season we’ve been able to get results in a number of different ways.

“It has been fun over the past week with everything going on but that’s forgotten about - now it’s out of my head.

“I’m now just thinking about the Ards game.”
