‘Olympic’s three goals could have been avoided’

Carrick boss Gary Haveron says he was maybe partially to blame as his side conceded three goals before seeing off Cliftonville Olympic in the Steel Cup.

“I impressed upon the boys to get out there and start with a high tempo and that’s what they did,” he admitted. “But we were caught out on the counter-attack and conceded a sloppy goal.

“Indeed, all three goals could have been very easily avoided.

“Even when we got it back to 1-1 and then 2-2, we were still going a bit gung-ho and went behind for a third time. However, even at that stage, I was confident we would get the better of the youthful Reds side.

“And sure enough, after a great header by Daniel Kelly got it back to 3-3, we then got our noses in front and went on to win by a 6-3 scoreline and that was maybe a wee bit flattering. But we were the better team by a fair bit at the finish.

“The semi-finals draw hasn’t been kind as we have drawn favourites Ards, but we’ll look forward to that match at Seaview (Friday, November 28) and see what happens. The winners of the Welders and Sporting Leisure await in the final.”

Haveron has also expressed his delight that a potentially worrying midweek trip to County Armagh has been avoided.

“There’s a little bit of good news in that the postponed league game against Loughgall has been rescheduled for Saturday, November 22. It removes the concerns about work problems and the like associated with a midweek fixture,” he said.
