The Northern Ireland boss is one of a number of candidates from the province being tipped for the post at Celtic Park.

O’Neill was amongst those being considered by the Celtic board to take over from Deila in the summer.

The names of his compatriots Neil Lennon and Brendan Rodgers are also likely to appear on that shortlist.

Deila arrived in Glasgow in 2014 following a successful spell with Norwegian outfit Stromsgodset.

But last Sunday’s penalty shoot-out defeat at the hands of Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi final seems to have been the final straw.

Northern Ireland boss O’Neill has a growing list of admirers following his success both with Shamrock Rovers and with the international side.

He will lead the Green and White Army to their first major tournament for 30 years when they head to the European Championships in France this summer.

O’Neill is under contract with the IFA for the next four years and any club who want him would have to pay a reported £750,000 in compensation.
