Only two SML sides left in Junior Cup

JUST two Ballymena Saturday Morning League sides remain in the second round of the Coca-Cola Junior Cup after last weekend.

Carniny Rangers and Randalstown Sky Blues carry the league's hopes in the Blue Riband event of junior football in this country - a trophy which has never been won by a SML side.

COCA-COLA JUNIOR CUP

Tollymore United 3, Carniny Rangers 7: Carniny got to the Semi Final of the Junior Cup last year and hope to win the trophy this season but they had to hit four goals in the second half to go through to the second round.

The visitors were hit with a sucker punch after five minutes after Tollymore scored when a long ball out of defence fell for the Tollymore striker to slot home from six yards.

The Carniny pressure finally paid off when Jason Robinson played a through ball from centre midfield to Neil McFadden who equalised with a low shot under the home keeper from 10 yards.

The home team hit back immediately when their centre forward ran through the Carniny midfield and fired a low drive past Alex McCosh to make it 2-1.

Midway through the half Carniny snatched an equaliser when Jordan Kenny sent over a cross from the right wing for an unmarked Scotty Drummond to hit home.

Two minutes later the visitors took the lead for the first time in the game when Neil McFadden collected the ball on the right wing, cut inside and sent a low pass for Scotty Drummond to score at the far post.

The half finished all square at 3-3 when Tollymore were awarded a free kick 20 yards out on the left. which was sent into the Carniny penalty box for a home striker to head home.

The second half saw a more determined Carniny as they took complete control and it was no surprise when they took the lead again when Neil McFadden sent in a cross from right wing which was headed across the goal by Scotty Drummond for Ryan Balmer to tap in from close range.

Although well on top Carniny had to wait until 10 minutes from time to extend their lead. Sixteen year old substitute Frazer Young made an immediate impact when he got onto the end of Ryan Balmer's left wing cross to score to make it 5-3.

Carniny ran riot in the last five minutes when first Jason Robinson headed the ball down to Ryan Bamber who tapped in from a yard.

Then in the last minute Frazer Young fired a corner kick across the box which fell to Stephen Greene who rifled the ball home to complete a great second half performance.

Richhill Reserves 3, Randalstown Sky Blues 4: Sky Blues have had indifferent start to the season but saved their best performance to date for this game which sees them into the next round of the Junior Cup.

The home side took the lead on 15 minutes against the run of play when Sky Blues were hit on the counter attack.

The visitors equalised on the half hour mark when Brian Surgenor who was causing the home defence lots of problems was upended in the box and a penalty was awarded. Jordan Craig stepped up and fired home from the spot.

Five minutes later Sky Blues took the lead when Brian Surgenor collected a ball from Jordan Craig 25 yards out and found the net with an unstoppable drive.

Sky Blues were well on top now and Brian Surgenor was the instigator of their third goal when he sent over a deep cross for David Chesney to head home.

Just before half time Sky Blues completed a great first half when David Chesney turned sharply and fired home from just inside the box to send them in 4-1 up at the break.

The second half saw Sky Blues well on top but they squandered chance after chance to add to their lead and this nearly cost them the tie as the home side hit them with two goals in the last 10 minutes which left Sky Blues scrambling to secure passage into the next round, but they held on thanks mainly to their first half performance.

BSML DIVISION ONE

Broadway Celtic 0, Harryville Homers 3: Homers maintained their 100 per cent start to the league campaign in their pursuit of league leaders Carniny Rangers with this win over Broadway Celtic thanks to a superb first half performance.

The opening goal came on 20 minutes after sustained pressure from Homers when an Ian Millar corner kick was half cleared to Gary Bonnes who drilled the ball home through a ruck of players.

Ten minutes later Homers doubled their score when Ian Millar floated in a free kick for David Gibson to head home.

Homers completed an excellent first half performance when they got their third goal when Gary Bonnes rose at the back post to head home an Ian Milar corner kick.

Celtic gave it a real go at the start of the second half but were reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes to go and this made their task even more difficult as Homers saw the game out to seal all three points.

BSML DIVISION TWO

St Comgalls 2, Waveney Swifts 4: Waveney continue to set the pace in Division Two with a win over fellow promotion rivals St Comgalls.

The game sprung into life on 20 minutes when Waveney took the lead when a corner kick from Ciaran Lemon was cleared to the edge of the penalty area to William McNabb who hammered the ball home.

It was 2-0 soon after and this goal came from route one when Richard Fulton thundered a ball up field which deceived the Saints defence and Kenny Wright raced through to score.

Swifts made 3-0 thanks to a third goal from Geoff Tweed who found the net with a free kick from 20 yards out.

Saints pulled a goal back right on the half time whistle when David Ferguson bundled the ball home during a goalmouth scramble to set up an exciting second half.

Any chance of a Saints revival was knocked back after 15 minutes when Jason Stephens picked out William McNabb on the right, he beat two defenders before squaring the ball across goal for Ryan McFadden to slot home and make it 4-1.

Saints pulled a goal back 10 minutes from time through Richard McKeown but it was too little too late.

BSML DIVISION THREE

FC Penarol 5, Cloughmills Thistle 0: This was Penarol's first match back at the Phoenix after the pitch had been damaged and a sparkling second half performance saw them maintain their 100 per cent start and go to the summit of Division Three.

The deadlock was broken five minutes into the second half when a good move on the right involving Neil Weir left Ricky Stewart clear to cross for Barry Mawhinney to fire home from 12 yards.

After this it was all Penarol, Barry Mawhinney played a one tow with David McBride to set himself clear and he fired home to make it 2-0.

David McBride got the third when he got the ball inside the penalty area and turned before rifling the ball into the net.

Penarol continued to dominate and they extended their lead when a through ball out of defence by Barry McCleary sent Ricky Stewart free and he made it 4-0.

The goal of the match was left until 10 minutes from time when Ricky Stewart picked the ball up on the halfway line cut in from the left and from 25 yards out fired the ball into the net with a superb shot to seal the victory for Penarol.
