ONSIDE: Moyes deserves chance to prove himself

I’m no big Manchester United fan. Actually, that’s a huge understatement, but I’m somewhat puzzled by the hysteria surrounding David Moyes’ position as manager.

Every dropped point is used as ‘evidence’ against him.

Yet, the Red Devils have secured more away wins in the Premier League than any other side and have progressed further in the Champions League than Manchester City and Arsenal.

Failure?

Moyes inherited a relatively poor squad, even though they were reigning champions, and didn’t strengthen it sufficiently during the summer. I’m not sure how much of that was down to him or the accounts department.

As United dropped out of the title, and then the Champions League qualification race, you could see the pressure mounting.

Moyes began to claim his team were unlucky in defeat when they plainly had been outplayed.

He’s survived all that, and I feel he’s under less pressure now that the reality of a trophyless campaign has sunk in.

I’m not prepared to go as far as say I want to see him succeed (as a Leeds fan I can’t bring myself to do that), but Moyes deserves to be given the chance to prove himself.

His players, his way.
