Our back to basics approach paid off, says Larne’s McMullan

Stuart McMullan says Larne’s back to basics approach reaped rewards in Saturday’s 3-0 win over PSNI.

The Reds recorded their second league success on the bounce but went into the game on the back of a dismal Steel Cup defeat to Sport & Leisure.

Defender McMullan said each player in a red shirt was aware of what was expected of them at Newforge and their collective industry had the desired result against the team propping up Championship 1.

“Everyone knew what we needed to do: work a lot harder and get back to basics,” he said.

“The early goal helped us but then I thought we stood off them a bit. The second goal helped to settle us and I thought it killed them off.”

A win’s a win but the Inver Park club need to find a level of consistency and McMullan admits there’s room for improvement.

“We still can do better but it is hard to complain when you get three points and a clean sheet which is important for me as a defender,” he said.

“We have good set-piece deliveries and quality with our two frontmen.”

Larne sit slap-bang in mid-table and will aim to improve on seventh spot with a win at Armagh City this weekend.

The men from the Orchard County have won just once in six attempts and have scored a meagre five goals in Championship 1. Larne have no such problems finding the net. The Invermen are the second-highest scorers in the league.

“We move on to Armagh which will be another big game for us but we are determined to get another win on the board. I haven’t played there before but am looking forward to the trip,” added McMullan.
